TallyPrime and Excel: ways to stop retyping data

The common ways data moves between Excel and TallyPrime, and how to choose the right one.

3 min read · Updated 2 Oct 2026

Most businesses using TallyPrime still use Excel somewhere — for price lists, branch data, bank statements or reports for management. Retyping between the two is slow and causes errors.

Excel into TallyPrime

  • Masters: create ledgers, stock items or employees in bulk from a sheet.
  • Transactions: import sales, purchases, receipts or journal entries prepared in Excel.
  • Recurring files: a fixed-format file from a branch, POS or partner imported regularly.

TallyPrime out to Excel

  • Standard export of any report.
  • A custom export that matches a format your management or bank expects.
  • Scheduled exports so the file is ready without someone running it.

Choosing the approach

One-time imports can often be done with standard tools. Anything repeated weekly or monthly, or anything that must match a fixed layout, usually benefits from a small customization so it runs the same way every time.
